Broadford Primary School
John Howieson went to Broadford Primary School on the Isle of Skye
Friday 9 March 2012
Here is his report.
I was invited by the Head Teacher of Broadford Primary School, roll about 100, to do an assembly introducing humanism. He told me his assembly guests were usually local ministers, and he thought a number of his parents would be pleased to hear he'd got me in.
I was introduced to the pupils, and used my powerpoint presentation and lots of questioning, in response to which the pupils were very forthcoming. One of them correctly identified my picture of Charles Darwin; one knew lightning was caused by "static"; lots of them offered opinions and ideas; and when I asked for questions at the end I got some very intelligent ones. I very much took the line of saying what humanism is, rather than contrasting it with any religion. After I'd finished, the pupils gave me a nice round of applause; two staff thanked me and said it had been "a breath of fresh air"; and the head teacher asked me if I'd be prepared to come again.
