When Margo MacDonald first spoke in favour of the right to an assisted death, I was sceptical. Her intervention in a 2008 parliamentary debate on the issue was poignant and moving. Margo suffers from Parkinson’s disease, but this strong and able woman is the last person one could imagine giving up on life. She was anxious to explain that she was not at that stage and may never reach it, but if she got to a point where her suffering became unbearable, she may wish to choose the time of her departure, writes Joan McAlpine in The Sunday Times
