Accord's member bodies, who include the Christian think-tank Ekklesia, the teaching union ATL and the British Humanist Association say that in this respect a number of schools and other educational bodies, including religious foundation ones, seem to have been acting with lack of ethical rigour and against the public interest, reports Ekklesia

Dr John Sentamu officially opened the Archbishop Sentamu Academy in East Hull saying his dream had become a reality as he toured the Hopewell Road site. It is one of six Church of England academies to open in the UK this term. A further 14 have been agreed with another 40 under discussion, according to BBC News

Four students were injured when they tried to deliver a petition to Parliament in Harare protesting at the failure of most of the country’s universities to open at the start of the new academic year. Three, including the president of the Zimbabwe National Students Union, were arrested. It was the first such heavy-handed action by police since President Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai signed a power-sharing agreement on September 15, reports The Times

The revolutionary technique involves an injection that can combat serious discomfort for more than three days - 14 times as long as morphine. The substance, which can be injected, appears to have few side effects and works by neutralising the chemical in the body that causes the brain to feel pain, reports Richard Alleyne Science Correspondent

More than 400 people were put to death in England for alleged witchcraft, and over 2,000 were executed in Scotland, before the 1735 Witchcraft Act put an end to the trials, campaigners said. Their bid to obtain justice for the victims follows an official pardon granted earlier this year by the Swiss Government to Anna Goeldi, beheaded in 1782 and regarded as the last person executed as a witch in Europe, according to The Daily Telegraph
