'Adam Smith in Edinburgh' will focus on the hitherto neglected story of Smith's early years and the way in which his career as a philosopher was launched in Edinburgh in the decade after the Forty-Five.

 

Nicholas Phillipson is Emeritus Reader in the Department of History at the University of Edinburgh. His primary research interests lie in the intellectual and cultural history of Scotland from the seventeenth century to the present and in the period of the Scottish Enlightenment in particular.

 

His publications include Hume (1989), The Scottish Whigs and the Reform of the Court of Session (1990) and 

Political Discourse in Early Modern Britain (ed. with Quentin Skinner) and numerous articles on the history of the Scottish Enlightenment. He is presently working on an intellectual biography of Adam Smith - we're very pleased that he's coming to give us a sneak preview.
