Joan Gibson - Was Confucius the first Humanist? Print
Monday, 07 January 2008, 19:30 - 21:30
In a small state in north east China 2500 years ago an ordinary man advocated a way of life that could bring peace and harmony to all. He had no divine inspiration and he offered no 'way of salvation'. Yet, it is claimed that he changed the course of history. Could his remedy for the social ills of his day have some relevance for us now?
Twenthieth century scholarship has thrown new light on the life and times of Confucius and his teachings. Is it possible that the current resurgence of interest in Confucius might also kindle an interest in Humanism?

Joan Gibson is a member of EG and a past member of the BOT. She grew up in the far east and has always been intersted in Chinese culture. Now retired, after working in nursing, retailing and tourism she has more time to be a student of life.
