New thinking on the issues surrounding prostitution, its causes, and its effect on individuals and society has lead to arguments for and against its decriminalisation and legalisation. Margaret Brown, of Scottish Women’s Aid, has many years’ experience of dealing with violence against women, and there are compelling reasons for viewing those who pay for sex as perpetrators of the abuse of women. In the DVD, ‘Not for Sale’, women who have escaped from a life of prostitution take the view that its decriminalisation would effectively legalise violence against women. Sweden has recently made payment for sex illegal.
This talk is intended to stimulate a discussion of the issues surrounding prostitution, and to form part of a wider HSS debate. |
