Glasgow Group grows and thrives. Welcome to the the initial blog from the Glasgow branch of the HSS. We cover an extensive area on the on the West of Scotland. From Denny to Dumfries and from Bute to Benderloch all are welcome.
For Brian B. this sometimes means leaving the Glasgow meetings early to catch the ferry back to Rothesay.
We are delighted that some of our regulars from the Central Region choose to come to Glasgow rather than going East. Nothing like keeping the East/West rivalries going! Our monthly meetings take place at the Pond Hotel on Great Western Road and such has been the growth in interest that we may have to ask for a larger room at the hotel. Next stop the SECC! However, numbers aren't everything and we aim to provide a stimulating group which meets the needs of our wide membership. On Sunday 18th May we had our final monthly meet of this session, prior to a summer break. We had lively participation from the floor from the members on topics such as the varied rewards and tribulations of being a funeral celebrant and the training required for this role. We reviewd our ongoing educational initiatives which involves the supply of teaching materials to schools, supplying speakers on Humanism to classrooms and supporting parents who have concerns about religious practices in the schools. The school visits builds on the pioneer work done by Ron and Ian. We considered the use of the internet to raise our profile. Looking back on the year's talks we had the specifically Glasgow film presentation of a play presented by the community group of member Bill Lambie, which dealt with the experience of asylum seekers in the city. The drama, acted out by the asylum seekers and locals, explored the tensions between both groups and showed how they could come to understand and support each other. At Yuletide we had again, our own in-house entertainment, this time provided by singer and guitarist member Irene. Although the next Hotel meet isn't untill September, plans are underway for the summer coach outing to Abbotsford House on the 17th August. We will again sponsor a suitably secular film at the GFT and our film buff Alice has some interesting choices in mind. We continue to support our adopted charities. Plans for the meetings for next session are well in place but suggestions are welcome to help build a satisfying group to meet the needs of our wide membership. Regards, Derek.
