Glasgow group Summer Outing news and the programme for 2008/2009 is well in place. It is often said that organising humanists is like trying to herd cats. In hippy parlance cats are cool! The Glasgow Group, while taking its normal summer break, managed to herd enough members onto a coach for the summer outing on August 17th. This year the destination was Abbotsford House in Melrose, the home of Sir Walter Scott. A fascinating guided tour brought us the story of Scott's life and times. One painting on display showed the young Scott attending a talk by Robert Burns to the leaders of what became known as the Scottish Enlightenment including David Hume and Adam Smith. A cultured golden age is depicted in that one scene. As we observe the current elections in the U.S.A we see a preponderance yet of attitudes and opinions that are not very enlightened. The tour was preceeded by a fine lunch at a Melrose hotel.
Members can now look forward to the monthly meetings commencing at the Pond Hotel from September 21st.in a season that takes in the Bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin. There will be two meetings before the HSS Annual conference in October at North Queensferry Hotel. In November as well as the talk on the 16th about teaching philosophy at schools ,there will be the sponsored film at the GFT.and then the Yuletide bash on December 21st. Autumn also brings the new intake of students into Glasgow's universities and Mandy will be making her Humanist chaplaincy services available to them at Glasgow and Caledonia. Hugh Hill is expanding his grief support groups for the bereaved and the celebrants continue with the growing demand for their services, a flavour of which was highlighted in the profile of group member Joe Hughes in the current edition of Humanitie, the Humanist Society of Scotland magazine. Please look at the Glasgow Events page for details of the Glasgow group's forthcoming events.
