Social division and sectarianism

The continuing sectarian behaviour focussed on soccer matches in Scotland is, we believe, a symptom of deeper divisions along religious faultlines.

This is the result of distant and more recent Scottish history and politics.

We applaud the Government’s response – a new Bill to outlaw and provide for increased penalties for sectarian behaviour associated with soccer – but we also propose that education, social segregation and inequality all contribute to sectarian feelings in Scotland.

We are currently working on our policy in this area.
