Policy and campaigns

The HSS wants to be a significant voice in public policy debates. We are increasingly asked ‘Where do (Scottish) Humanists stand?’ on important issues in public life.

We aim to reflect the views of the millions of Scots who have no religious belief, and want to promote a secular Scotland - one in which there is equal treatment in law and policy of everyone, regardless of religion, belief and non-belief.

This is an important job as today’s Scotland develops, and it is why we develop and publicise a range of policies. On some of them, we actively campaign.

The H Factor – what humanists think

In 2010 the Society made a series of nine short films with ‘real’ humanists talking about their views on a range of important issues.

Declining religiosity – the misconceived Census and the 2011 Social Attitudes Survey

Unless we start with reality, we might end up somewhere else – so it’s important to get a proper grasp on what’s happening to levels of religious belief and practice in Scottish society.

Good Without God

Humanist organisations around the world have campaigned to show that people don’t need the threat of external sanctions to be good.

Education

Education must be one of the main pillars of a secular society – and that means education not indoctrination. This is one of the main areas of our activity.

Same Sex Marriage

Love doesn’t discriminate, and neither should the law!

We'll soon be posting details of our activity in support of the Bill to legalise Same Sex Marriage in Scotland - the debate will be ferocious in 2012!

We staged an event at the Scottish Parliament on 8 December 2011 in support of Same Sex Marriage. You can read the speeches here.

Assisted Suicide

If we each own our selves and our lives, then do we possess the right to end them as well? In well-defined circumstances, we think the answer is yes.

We'll soon be posting details of how we are supporting Margo McDonald’s 2012 Assisted Suicide (Scotland) Bill. In the meantime please review our current policy.

Support and sponsorship

It’s important that like-minded organisations work together – so here are links to those other organisations we support, and think you might be interested in.
