The HSS provides a range of non-religious ceremonies for people who want to mark life’s important events; marriage, birth and death. After a long campaign, in June 2005 the Registrar General of Scotland allowed us to conduct legal marriages, making Scotland one of very few countries in the world, and the only part of the UK, where Humanist weddings are legal.

We currently have more than 60 celebrants in a well-organised national network, with regional and area coordinators. Celebrants undergo rigorous training and assessment, and a proposed new review scheme will ensure the highest professional standards. They are also invited to attend two national conferences each year and receive quarterly newsletters on new developments and best practice.

The role is demanding, requiring strong interpersonal skills, and high levels of ability in interviewing, writing, public speaking and presentation, but it is uniquely rewarding; to know that you have accurately, honestly and powerfully celebrated the life of a fellow human being is a great privilege. The same can be said of helping a couple to create a sincere and uniquely personal ceremony to celebrate their marriage, or to welcome their baby into the world.

HSS Celebrants come from diverse backgrounds. As Humanists, we accept people exactly as they are, regardless of race, gender, social status and sexual identity. We treat all of our clients equally, and hope that when you are looking for one of us to perform a ceremony on your behalf, you will bear this in mind.
