About Me

Thanks for Looking by.... I'm Ross, and I live in  Pollokshields,Glasgow.

I formally signed up as a humanist after doing a reading at the naming ceremony for my friends' baby. When I actually listened to the words I was saying, I realised they were much more meaningful than the religious ceremonies that I'd been brought up with.

It is a privilege to help people through the most important rites of passage of life, welcoming new life into the world, celebrating love and, at the end, celebrating a life that is complete.

Instead of religion, I 've always believed in people. I think it's our relationships with our fellow humans that make life worthwhile.

Funerals

Looking back on the events of a life that has been lived is a great way of celebrating life. It also allows those remaining to reflect on how the deceased person contributed to their own lives.

During a funeral I would like people to have had a chance to reflect on the whole life of the deceased.
.......nobody is perfect, but everyone's life is unique, and everyone's life contain many things worth celebrating.

We all, in our own ways, live amazing lives. It's a privilege to recount the stories of people's lives and to set the life of each person in their place within their community, the time they've lived through, and what they meant to their family and friends.

At the end of the ceremony I would hope people would leave with a sense of peace and perhaps some optimism about life ahead.

Namings

There is no more happy event that the appearance of a new life, and the potential that the new life holds.

As with all ceremonies it's important that your baby's naming ceremony should reflect your values and what you think is importantin life.

Celebrating the rites of passage like namings  give us an opportunity to examine what life means to us, and there's no better reason for a party than getting together to welcome a new baby into the world!

Same Sex Affirmations

Love is Love and that's all there is to it. When you chose to celebrate and acknowledge love publicly it is one of the most life affirming events we can experience. Whether you chose to enter a legally binding contract is up to you, (unfortunately humanist celebrants can't yet conduct legal Civil Partnerships) but it would be a privilege to help you celebrate your love and commitment to each other.

There are many tradtions you might like to follow in your affirmation ceremony, but my advice would be to think about what is important to you both, and to construct a ceremony what feels right for you.

My favourite prose concerning love comes from Leonard Bernstein's "Candide".
It isn't about romance or passion, but instead recognises that while nobody is perfect, that you can be perfect for each other

            And let us try,
            Before we die,
To make some sense of life.
We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
            And make our garden grow...
            And make our garden grow.

Weddings

Love is Love and that's all there is to it. When you chose to celebrate and acknowledge love publicly it is one of the most life affirming events we can experience.

Weddings are surrounded by a mass of traditions , but my advice would be to think about what is important for you both, and to construct a ceremony what feels right for you.

In that context it would be a privilege for me to help you celebrate your love and commitment to  each other.
