About Me

Background & Experience
I trained as a Humanist celebrant in May 2009. Prior to this I was a Primary School Head Teacher.
My brother had been a Celebrant and had conducted several family ceremonies so I was familiar with the work. I formed a high opinion of the Humanist Society of Scotland and although uncertain whether I would cope with the emotional side of ceremonies I undertook the training followed by a period of mentoring. It turned out to be the most enjoyable and rewarding work I had ever done.

I am married with a grown – up family. With members scattered around the world I spend a lot of time keeping up with family news and visits. I enjoy being outdoor whether on long walks in the highlands or pottering about in the garden! I am also a bit crafty with interests in knitting, spinning and crochet.

What Humanism means to me.
Living the one life I have to the full. Treating others with the same respect I want for myself and caring for the amazing world we live in.

Funerals

I take my role at funerals very seriously and regard it as a privilege to share with the family, memories and experiences that become a personal tribute during the ceremony. Although the loss of a loved one is a time of sadness for family and friends, there are often happy memories to reflect upon and so find comfort. I work to make each ceremony a celebration of a life and each ceremony is in accordance with the wishes of the family. Every Humanist funeral is different.

Namings

My first Naming Ceremony was a special Family Day for my young grandchildren. They were welcomed into a caring family and circle of friends in a lovely ceremony with music and poetry chosen by the parents. There was a symbolic tree planting and the signing of unique commemorative certificates making it a very happy occasion for everyone and particularly me! By conducting distinctive Naming Ceremonies, I look forward to helping other families celebrate the arrival of a baby into our world.
